CASSIE

That evening in the backyard, I peg the exact moment that Kyle tells Aaron that he’d come in my mouth.

Then again, everyone witnesses the moment, even if they don’t understand what it means.

“You what?” Aaron all but shouts, and he follows it with a spectacular crash that sends every neck craning instantly his way, mine included.

Stationed by the grill, spatula in hand, he’s dropped the platter that awaits the burgers he watches—or had watched, at least, since he no longer pays them the slightest bit of attention. He stares at Kyle instead, his strong jaw held ajar and his eyes wide. When Kyle bends to pick up the platter with a grin dominating his features, Aaron looks over his back to where I sit in between Millie and Annette with my legs dangling in the pool. His jaw clamps shut, his dark eyes flash, his nostrils flare. It’s not jealousy, that sends his broad hand running over his close-cropped hair, but it’s certainly determination, and—

Had I dropped to my knees for Kyle in some part because Aaron had told me that he wanted my mouth? I’d mostly just wanted him, Kyle, wanted to build and then break the tension in his muscles, wanted to watch every hint of pleasure steal across his face, wanted him to feel some part of the bliss he’d given me—or more still, because I want to win, whatever that means, but—

I’d thought of Aaron too, just as I’d thought of Kyle the night before when Aaron had played my body like a skilled musician, all while James, Millie, and Luke had set the mood with the most fitting soundtrack imaginable.

“What did you do?” Annette asks, her measured gaze aimed not towards Kyle and Aaron, but at me.

“What makes you think I—”

She ignores my protest in favor of a different route. “Millie, you’ve noticed that Kyle hasn’t stopped smiling since we went shopping, haven’t you? I can’t imagine he’s that enthused about the shirts he ended up getting.”

Millie picks it up instantly. “Oh, I don’t know,” she muses. She lifts her hair to pile atop her head, and, when she tugs up the thick mass of her curls, she reveals a faint, reddish mark just behind her ear. “Did you see the blue shirt? That one was pretty—”

As she pulls a scrunchie from her wrist, my fingers snake out to trace across the raised, swollen bruise. “Which one gave you this?”

It cuts her teasing short, and her fingers join mine. She looks like she really considers the question. “James, I think.”

“How do you know?”

“It’s—” She shifts, crossing one leg over the other, and her calves twist beneath the cool water. “I don’t know for sure, but…he was behind me the most last night, so I’d guess it was him.”

Jesus, the most.

What have I gotten myself into?

No, not just that. What have I gotten myself into, and how can I get there faster?

“Cassie.” Annette pulls me from my reverie, and she turns her torso entirely my way.
